1.0 Hardware and Software Requirements
======================================
Hardware Requirements: 386 or higher with 12 megs Ram (16
recommended), a VGA Display (Super VGA with 256 colors or
higher recommended), and at least 6 megs of hard disk
space. You also need a connection to the Internet, via a
Modem, Ethernet Card, Token Ring or ISDN.
Software Requirements: OS/2 Warp Connect Version 3
OS/2 Warp Version 4 running the TCP/IP software.
2.0 Installation Instructions
=============================
After downloading the Netscape Navigator Beta 1a for OS/2,
and unzipping the NSOS2_1a.ZIP file, simply run the
INSTALL.EXE program that is located in the directory that
the .ZIP file was unzipped into. The INSTALL program will
prompt you for the drive and directory that you want the
Netscape Navigator for OS/2 installed in.
The Install program will install the program, and prompt
you for the installation directory. If you are installing
this program on OS/2 Warp Version 4, you will be asked
whether you want to convert your default browser for your
desktop URL objects to Netscape Navigator. If you respond
yes, then desktop URL objects will load the Netscape
Navigator browser window when opened. This will be the
default for desktop URL objects. Any URL objects that you
have set a specific browser for will not be affected. The
default browser for desktop URL objects with OS/2 Warp
Version 4 is WebExplorer.
NOTE: The desktop URL objects only function correctly if
you add the Netscape Navigator installation directory to
the PATH statement in CONFIG.SYS and reboot.
The second question you will be prompted to answer,
regardless of which version of OS/2 Warp you are using, is
whether you want your WebExplorer QuickList to be
converted to Netscape Navigator Bookmarks. Answering yes
will provide you the ability to quickly get to your
favorite Web pages under Netscape Navigator.
NOTE: If you were using Netscape Navigator for Windows
3.1, and have a set of bookmarks that you would like to
use with the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, simply
locate the BOOKMARK.HTM file located in the directory that
your Netscape Navigator for Windows 3.1 is installed in,
and copy that file into the directory that you have
installed Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp. You cannot
use both your Netscape for Windows bookmarks, and your
bookmarks converted from WebExplorer in this release.
The install program will create a folder on your desktop
called "Netscape", and place three objects in it. The
first object is the Installation Utility. This can be used
to delete, update, and re-install the Netscape Navigator
for OS/2 Warp. The second object is the Netscape
Navigator for OS/2 program object that can be used to
start the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, and the third
is a shadow object of this READ.ME file.
NOTE: If you are using any prior version of Netscape
Navigator Beta for OS/2, this release must be completely
deleted before installing Beta 1a. To do this, use the
Installation Utility in the Netscape folder and select
Delete from the Action menu. Then you should look at the
directory that the Beta 1 release was installed in and
delete all files and subdirectories in that directory.
Finally, you should delete the Netscape folder from the
Desktop. Once this is complete, you may begin the
installation of the Netscape Navigator Beta 1a for OS/2 Warp.
If you currently have Netscape Navigator for Windows 3.1,
and you want to be able to continue to run that version of
Netscape Navigator, do not install this OS/2 version in
the same directory as your Windows version.
3.0 Function included in the Beta 1a release
============================================
Browsing the web - You can use this Beta 1a to browse
anywhere on the Web. With the exception of the known
problems listed below, you can view and use any page.
If you encounter problems doing this, please let us
know!
HTML 3.0 - This Beta fully supports the HTML 3.0 tags.
Any HTML 3.0 document can be viewed using this version
of the Netscape Navigator.
Frames - Frame support is fully functional in this Beta.
You can view documents created with frames and navigate
through the frames.
JavaScript - You can use this Beta to view HTML pages that
contain JavaScript. JavaScript is a programming
language that allows the Netscape Navigator to take
special actions when executed.
News - You can use this Beta to view News articles and
browse Newsgroups. Note that because the Mail function
of the Netscape Navigator is not available in this beta
release, you will not be able to append to Newsgroups.
Bookmarks - You can create bookmarks for your favorite Web
pages, and save them for future use. Note, however,
that the Bookmark window is not available in this beta,
therefore bookmarks must be accessed from the Bookmark
menu item.
History - The Navigator will maintain a history of the Web
pages that have been accessed. You can use this
History list from the Go menu. Note, however, that the
History window used for viewing very long history
lists, is not available in this beta.
Forward, Back, Stop - You can traverse the history of Web
pages that have been visited in sequential order using
the Back and Forward buttons on the toolbar. You can
also interrupt the load of any page by using the Stop
button or pressing the Esc key.
Preferences - The Navigator preferences are fully
functional with only a few exceptions noted in the
following sections. These preferences, for Appearance,
Mail and News, Network and Security can be used to
tailor the use of your Navigator.
Caching - The Navigator uses the cache to speed reloading
to previous loaded pages. You can use options to
specify how much disk space and memory the cache should
take and to also clear the cache.
Plugin API - For developers wishing to develop native OS/2
Plugins for the Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp, we
have available a Plugin toolkit including header files,
libraries and sample code for building OS/2 native
plugins. To download the toolkit, go to
http://www.internet.ibm.com/browsers/netscape/warp page
and select OS/2 Plug-in Developers Kit.

4.1 Java
--------
The Netscape Navigator Beta 1a for OS/2 Warp Java support
and JavaScript have only had limited testing to date. We
are in the process of completing this testing, but we
wanted to make the function available to you in this beta
release to get your feedback.
Java applets will only run if you are using OS/2 Warp
Version 4.
We have found that JAVA applets used to limit access to
secure sites will not work, and therefore those web sites
cannot be accessed using this beta release.
5.0 Using Netscape Navigator behind a Firewall
==============================================
Netscape Navigator 2.02 for OS/2 Warp works best when
directly connected to the Internet. If you are behind a
firewall you must do one of the following to enable access
to the World Wide Web.
5.1 Socks for OS/2 Warp 4 (Merlin) users
----------------------------------------
If you use OS/2 Warp 4, you can enable socks support in
the TCP/IP Configuration settings notebook that you will
find inside the System Setup folder. If you previously
configured Socks through Nescape Navigator, and are now
going to use the support in Merlin, you must clear
your configuration in Netscape Navigator.
Select the "Socks" section and fill in each of the three
pages.
Page 1...
Your domain name (for example, ibm.com)
Your socks nameserver (for example socks.austin.ibm.com)
Page 2...
Specify IP addresses that are inside your firewall (that
you can access directly). For example...
IP addr 9.0.0.0 Mask 255.0.0.0
Page 3...
Specify name of socks server and IP addresses that you
will access through the gateway. For example...
socks.austin.ibm.com 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
Once correctly enabled you should find two files in your
MPTN/ETC directory; SOCKS.CFG and SOCKS.ENV. The contents
of these files should look something like...
SOCKS.CFG
direct 9.0.0.0 255.0.0.0
sockd @=socks.austin.ibm.com 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0
SOCKS.ENV
socks_flag on
socks_user
socks_domain ibm.com
socks_ns socks.austin.ibm.com
socks_server
NOTE: Once enabling socks support in OS/2 Warp 4, DO NOT
use the Netscape Navigator Network Preferences option to
configure any proxy or socks gateway.
5.2 Socks Gateway
-----------------
If you choose not to use the built-in OS/2 support for
socks, or you are running OS/2 Warp 3.0, then use the
Netscape Navigator Network Preferences to configure a
socks server.
Select Manual Configuration from the Proxy page of the
Network Preferences dialog and select View... Enter the
name and port number for your socks server in the socks
server field. The port number for socks is usually 1080.
5.3 Proxy Gateway
-----------------
If you choose not to use the built-in OS/2 support for
socks, or you must use a proxy gateway, then use the
Netscape Navigator Network Preferences to configure a
proxy gateway. The port number for proxy is usually 80.
Note that you must fully qualify a a proxy gateway.
(ie: http://proxy.anywhere.com/)
Select Manual Configuration from the Proxy page of the
Network Preferences dialog and select View... Enter the
name and port number for your proxy gateway in the HTTP
Proxy field.
6.0 Reporting problems
======================
If you find a problem while using the beta release of the
Navigator for OS/2, please contact IBM beta support using
one of the following methods
NOTE: THE WEB SITE METHOD IS THE PREFERRED METHOD OF
REPORTING PROBLEMS. WHEN PROBLEMS ARE RECEIVED
USING THIS PROCESS, WE CAN AUTOMATE THE TRACKING
AND RESOLUTION OF THE PROBLEM. LOWER PRIORITY WILL
BE PLACED ON PROBLEMS RECEIVED VIA THE EMAIL METHOD.
6.1 Web Site
------------
You can select "How to give feedback" from the Navigator's
Help menu and complete the on-line form or if you cannot
run the Netscape Navigator to submit the problem, you can
use WebExplorer or an alternate web browser and go to
http://service.software.ibm.com/reg/netscp/probrpt-r to
complete the problem report form.
6.2 Email
---------
Email your problem description to netbeta@vnet.ibm.com
7.0 Known problems
==================
We are aware of the following problems in this Beta 1a
release of Netscape Navigator for OS/2 Warp and are
working to resolve them. If you find other problems
please report them using the method described in section
4.0 above.
7.1 General
-----------
- On systems running at VGA resolution (640x480x16),
there are some problems drawing text. Although
this is a tepmorary restriction, we recommed
running at a higher resolution.
- When the Navigator is looking for a host on the
Internet, it does not allow you to perform other
tasks. You must wait until either the hostname
is found or the search times out.
- When the Navigator is finished loading a page or
image, the Stop button should be disabled. It remains
enabled all the time.
- You cannot launch Telnet or TN3270 applications from
within the browser window.
- Some graphics that have many similar colors in them
will occasionally be drawn with some of the colors
incorrect.
- You may see strange characters displayed in listboxes
if you are attempting to display a page that uses
international characters.
- The Stop toolbar button in the news window is not
functional.
- When resizing frames, you may see text cut-off,
misaligned, or Java applets in the wrong location
after the resize.
- Because the Bookmarks window is not available in this
beta, when you have added a certain number of
bookmarks, you will not be able to access additional
bookmarks as they are not visible at the bottom of the
Bookmarks menu.
- If you wish to delete some of your bookmarks, you can
edit the BOOKMARK.HTM file in your Netscape Navigator
directory. You should delete the line(s) describing
the bookmark you wish to delete.
- Occasionally the top of the page is initially displayed
off the top of the browser window area.
- Sometimes links (text is colored blue or red) are not
underlined.
- The <BLINK> tag is not working. The text does not
blink.
7.2 Installation
----------------
- If you use the Install Utility to delete the Netscape
Navigator, not all files and directories will be
deleted from the system. You can manually delete the
files and directories from the Workplace shell or a
command prompt.
- Occasionally, after you have de-installed Netscape
Navigator, the Netscape folder on the Workplace shell
desktop will not be deleted, nor will all of the
objects it contains. These objects cannot be used, and
they should be deleted manually after a reboot.
7.3 Preferences
---------------
- The general preferences for toolbars that allow you to
configure the appearance of the toolbar, are not
functioning for the browser window.
- The Helper Apps preference page does not display the
correct icon for the Helper application.
- The Applications preference page allows you to specify a
temporary directory. If you change this
- The preferences on the Image page in the General
Preferences setting are not functioning.
- You should turn off the "Submitting a Form Insecurely"
in the Security Preferences Not doing this will cause
multiple warnings to appear, rendering the browser window
unusable.
- The proxy addresses, for manual proxies, in the Network
Prefernces are limited to 32 characters. You can work
around this problem by determinig the numeric ip address
of the host and entering that.
7.4 Java
--------
- Accessing pages that contain Java applets from behind a
firewall can only be done using Socks for OS/2 Warp or
a Proxy Gateway. (See sections 5.1 and 5.3)
- Some Java applets do not respond to keystrokes.
- Animated images displayed using Java on secure web
pages may not be visible.
